VILLE PLATTE It is with heavy hearts that the family of Wilbur Jerome Percy LaFleur, 77, announces his passing from this world to join his Savior in the next Wilbur passed away peacefully Saturday, February 8, 2014 in Oceans Springs, Mississippi. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at The Sacred of Jesus Catholic Church of Ville Platte with Rite of Committal to follow in the Evangeline Memorial Park Cemetery. Father Brian Harrington will officiate the services.
Precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of his former wife, Doretha Raines and his three beloved daughters: Lawanda LaFleur and her husband, Christopher Norton, Sherry L. Hall and her husband, Christopher and Gay LaFleur. Wilbur was blessed with two grandsons: Christopher Hall and Michael Hall and his wife, Courtney and further blessed with a great grandson, Michael Byron Hall. He also leaves behind three brothers: Jimmy LaFleur and his wife, Connie, Carl R. LaFleur and Danny LaFleur and his wife, Brenda. Wilbur will be mourned by his numerous cousins and countless friends that were lucky enough to have crossed paths with him.
Wilbur, or as many called him, Percy spent his childhood in Ville Platte, LA. As a youngster, he proudly served as an Alter Boy for The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and was seated second in the Louisiana State Boxing Tournament as a senior in high school. After graduating from high school he attended and completed barber school, after several years of running a thriving business, the late 60s and early 70s brought in a trend of fewer and fewer haircuts. He then decided to return to college and obtained a degree in Horticulture after which time he opened LaFleurs Nurseries in New Orleans his beautiful landscaping and designs can still be seen in many parts of New Orleans and Metairie. After years of hard work, Wilbur went into a well deserved semiretirement in Bay St. Louis, MS. where he built a beautiful home. His dream home was destroyed during the great tragedy that was Hurricane Katrina but Wilbur was the first to begin rebuilding in the area and was featured in the book, Between Hell and High Water, and on WLOX TV for his valiant efforts and hard work. He will be remembered as an avid New Orleans Saints fan, a community advocate and the one to call when one needed an excellent chef for a seafood boil, pig roast or a big pot of Gumbo, it is also rumored that he led a mean second line when the occasion called for it
He will now reunite in Heaven with his parents, Percy and Rose Guillaumin LaFleur they surely await that reunion with open arms and joyous hearts.
At the request of the LaFleur family, visitation will take place at Ardoins Funeral Home of Ville Platte beginning at 9:00 AM Tuesday, February 11, 2014 and will continue until the time of the service. A Rosary will be recited in honor at 10:15 AM Tuesday morning.
