VILLE PLATTE- It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Donald "D.W." Helmer announces his passing on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Savoy Hospital in Mamou after a brief illness. He was 80 years old. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11 AM at the Bayou Chicot Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Vandenburg Cemetery with Rev. Ross Ford officiating.
Don dedicated 56 years to the oilfield and worked with Nicklos Drilling Co. for 33 years. In 2008, Mr. Helmer retired as a consultant.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Don will be missed by his loving wife of 58 years Joyce Davenport Helmer, two sons, Donald Glynn Helmer and companion Judy Fosdick and Jerry Wayne Helmer and wife Monica Helmer of Bayou Chicot. He will also be missed by his 6 grandchildren, Richard Glynn Helmer of Carencro, Shelby Helmer Vidrine and husband Sam of Pine Prairie, Peyton Helmer of Bayou Chicot, Amy Comeaux and husband Moses of Eunice, John Horn of Washington State, Michael Reilly of California and by his 2 Great grandchildren, Aubrey Helmer of Eunice and Madison Comeaux of Eunice.
At the request of the Helmer family, a visitation will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 from 3 PM until 9 PM at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Ville Platte and will reopen again on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 8 AM at Bayou Chicot Methodist Church in Bayou Chicot.
The family has selected Nicholas Tremie, Billy Davenport, Jr., Robert Davenport, II, Peyton Helmer, Jon Helmer, Douglas Davenport to serve as pallbearers and Richard Glynn Helmer, Bennie Helmer and Bobbie Helmer to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are entrusted to Ardoin's Funeral Home of Ville Platte, La.
