Kevin and Alton (baby Al as I always called him) were 2 noble men who stood tall among others--in spite of struggles they had. They strived to always do the right thing. They had strong convictions and listened to their hearts and let their beliefs guided them. Kevin was always glad to see me--I am the last of the 'great Mohicans" the last living relative on his paternal side, & he quietly, gently & humorously recognized me as such. I was his godmother and I find it hard to believe I won't see him on earth anymore, but he lives in my heart, never forgotten. Alton, too, always expressed pleasure in seeing me. always complimentary full of sweet words. One of the last thing I remember Alton telling me as I came to visit him as he worked outside in his yard, was, "Tetante, I love Jesus." I knew he was meditating on this as I arrived. I'll never forget the intense look in his eyes as his mine met his. I thank and praise God that I knew these young men, and that they are members of my family. May they be sitting at the foot of the throne of God the Father, praising and worshiping him with all the angels into eternity. Amen.

I went to school with Kevin and Alton some 20 years ago in Houston. Kevin was larger than life! He used to always ask me for 25-cents to make a phone call. Naturally Kevin didn’t need to make a call – He wanted to see if he could get it out of me! Kevin always made me laugh.

Alton was the most humanitarian man I have ever met in life! He could see – with astonishing clarity - the goodness in others; and he could truly see from the other person’s unique point of view. When someone was irritating to me, Alton would affectionately illustrate the other person’s perspective. Every time Alton helped me realize that I was seeing things all wrong. Alton helped me see that the person I felt ‘irritating’ was gracious and right!

I had not heard from Kevin or Alton since all this time – Some 20 years. But just tonight I had this overwhelming emotion come over me: I remembered how Alton would keenly point out another person’s point of view… And how I needed to acknowledge and appreciate that with great compassion! It happened after a situation I was having with someone up here in New York. Suddenly I could hear Alton’s voice telling me to fully and compassionately see this other person’s point of view – And not to fall short of that social responsibility! With it came this tremendous appreciation and realization of just how enormous was the heart, the kindness, and compassion of Alton Lejeune! After those strong feelings I pledged to try and see it that way more often – I felt it was a time for a change for the better!

Later on tonight, I got to wondering just how Kevin & Alton have been doing after all these years. That’s when I discovered they had both passed away.

There is little comfort I can give to those that feel their loss. But there is some solace in recalling the inspiring memories of the exemplary life Kevin and Alton led. And we should be comforted in the knowledge that they do live in the minds and hearts of all who knew them. May their passing create inspiration and new life in your mind despite this hour of sorrow – It has for me! I am truly all the better for having known them!

“He is not gone. He is just away,
With cheery smile and the wave of a hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us wondering how very fair that land
May be, since he tarries there.”

    - Walt Whitman.
